The Department for International Development (DFID) works to eliminate poverty and to encourage economic growth to benefit the poor. We do this by supporting projects tailored to specific country needs, which help communities to work together to raise living standards. Since 1996, when the first country programme began, UK has channelled development aid to Armenia through DFID Section in the UK Embassy. In 2004, DFID drew up the Regional Assistance Plan 2004- 2007 for Central Asia, South Caucasus and Moldova, outlining priority areas of DFID assistance in the region.

The status of a lower middle income country (LMIC) that Armenia gained in early 2006, led DFID towards phasing out its bilateral programme from the country by the end of 2008. DFID’s financial support to the country during 2007/08 fiscal year is £3.4 million. We mainly work at the national level and within the framework of the poverty reduction strategy contributing to the achievement of the MDGs. For details see Armenia fact sheet.

At the end of December 2008 DFID closed its bilateral programmes in Armenia
