Defence section

The  Defence Section is headed by HMA Charles Lonsdale.

The Defence Attaché, based at the British Embassy in Tbilisi, covers the South Caucasus region. He visits Armenia regularly and works closely with the Department of international military co-operation and defence programmes to maintain a dialogue between the UK and Armenia on defence matters. Sergey Mirzoyan is the Defence Relations Officer at the British Embassy Yerevan.

Training and Development

The UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) offers scholarships, training and courses to officials in the Armenian Defence Ministry.  Places are offered on a wide range of English language, military and instructors’ skills training courses in the UK and at the British Military Advisory Training Team (BMATT) in Vyškov, Czech Republic. The BMATT has been requested by the Armenian MOD to provide assistance with training cadres for the Second Armenian Peacekeeping Battalion. The MOD UK also offers advice and assistance to the Armenian MOD through Security Sector Development and Advisory Team (SSDAT) on an as required basis on topics as diverse as budgeting, development of doctrine and personnel management.

English Language Training

Through the Peacekeeping English Project (PEP), jointly funded by the UK MOD and FCO, the British and Armenian MODs operate a project aimed at improving English language training for the military. The project is currently based at Armenia's Peacekeeping Brigade in Yerevan, the Armenian MOD and the Armenian Humanitarian Demining Centre (AHDC) in Echmiadzin. The project is overseen by a PEP manager, Tony Crocker.
