Embassy building

British Embassy in YerevanThe construction of a new flagship British Embassy in Yerevan was completed in 2003. The site at 34 Baghramyan Avenue was identified and the land purchased in 1995. The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester laid the foundation stone in 2001 and the Embassy moved to the new office in February 2003.

The British architect Roger Molyneux decided to keep the original façade of the building and to blend Armenian building materials and architectural traditions with modern British architectural design. Interior design consultant Jan Carter chose brightly coloured British furniture and appropriate art work to set off the Armenian wood and stonework featured in the interior of the building.

On 22 May 2003 Linda Duffield, Director for Wider Europe in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and His Holiness the Catholicos of All Armenians Karegin II formally opened the Embassy. In accordance with Armenian tradition, and to the great pleasure of both British and Armenian staff, His Holiness also conducted a blessing ceremony inside the building.
