Disabled access

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office and our Embassy are keen to ensure that their buildings and services are fully accessible to disabled members of the public. Wherever possible, we have made our buildings and services accessible. Sometimes however, this is not possible due to security or other restrictions. In these situations we will endeavour to provide a service or access to a building in an alternative way to ensure equality of access for disabled people. To assist disabled visitors, we have set out below details of disabled access at this Embassy. We hope this information is helpful.

General physical access

The British Embassy is a modern building that has been designed and built with many features to aid disabled customers in mind. There are, however, some points that you will wish to take note of if you plan to visit us.

  • There are small, single steps that must be negotiated to enter the main outer door and to access the vehicle ramp. A mobile ramp and Embassy security staff are available to assist.
  • Wheelchair access to the office is gained by using the vehicle ramp and then the lift;
  • The lift is available to all floors of the Embassy and is fully accessible to wheelchair-users;
  • Each floor is equipped with a toilet specially designed for the needs of wheelchair-users and those with limited physical mobility;
  • The public areas of the Visa and Consular Section, including the counter and interview room, are easily accessible to those in wheelchairs or with physical disabilities. The toilet in the Section was not designed for wheelchair use but there is an alternative nearby;
  • The lift and all interior and exterior stairways are fitted with handrails;
  • Please contact the Management Officer about parking if you are arriving by car and have particularly acute physical access needs;
  • Floor coverings within the Embassy are safe and even;
  • Internal doors are mostly fire doors and therefore heavy and not easy to use for those with mobility impairment;
  • The building is generally well lit;
  • The Embassy is fitted with emergency alarms and arrangements are in place for assisting disabled visitors in case of emergency/evacuation.

Access for visually-impaired and Deaf/hard of hearing visitors

  • Signs within the Embassy are mostly clear and easy to read in both Armenian and English. Some of the statutory notices in the Visa/Consular Section are, however, not ideally formatted for the visually impaired. Please ask if you require any help with any information within the Embassy. This is something that we are currently reviewing;
  • Both Guide and Hearing dogs are welcome;
  • Minicom and textphones are not installed;
  • The Counter at the Consular/Visa Section has an efficient speaker amplification system.
