BE supported women leaders in parliament (22/07/2009)
Parliament Vice-Speaker Arevik Petrosyan welcomed on July 20 the participants of the "Women leaders for equality" project implemented by "Capacity and development for civil society" NGO with the support from the British Embassy Yerevan.
The main objective of the project is to promote the role of women in country’s social-political life. In the framework of the project a documentary was filmed that introduces six politically active Armenian women, including Arevik Petrosyan and MP Larissa Alaverdyan. The film was screened in more than 40 communities in ten regions of Armenia, followed by three-day seminar-discussions involving 40 prominent girls and women from those communities.
“It is important for women to represent their own concerns through the parliament. Also, the society will benefit greatly from the involvement of many talented women in active political life”, Mr. Lonsdale said.
Ms. Petrosyan said that the parliament currently has 12 women MPs who are taking active part in the Parliament’s work and have a distinctive work style. Ms. Petrosyan and Charles Lonsdale handed certificates to the participants of the project and the film participants received thank-you letters.
Vice-speaker Arevik Petrosyan introduced the guests to the structure and activity of the parliament. The guests also learned the history of Parliament and had a chance to be in the Parliament Session Hall.
